Mega Absol ex and Hydreigon Deck Guide in Pokémon TCG Pocket
A disruptive dark-type deck that wins through efficient damage and point trade math
This deck applies early pressure with Hydreigon's high-damage attacks, then transitions to Mega Absol ex for hand disruption and closing power. The win condition revolves around forcing opponents into an inefficient point trade: knocking out your single-point Hydreigon gives them a slow path to the 3 points they need, so your priority is protecting Mega Absol ex, whose knockout hands over all 3 points at once.
The decklist
How it works
Hydreigon is the deck's early-game powerhouse with its Roar in Unison ability,
which lets you attach 2
Darkness Energy from your Energy
Zone per turn (with a 30 HP cost). This accelerates energy for Hyper Ray's 130
damage at the cost of 3
Darkness Energy. Keep in mind that
Hyper Ray discards all Energy from Hydreigon, so you need Roar in Unison to
re-charge before it can attack or retreat again. With 150 HP, it requires
careful management against opposing ex Pokémon.
Mega Absol ex serves as the late-game finisher with Darkness Claw, dealing 80
damage for ![]()
Darkness while discarding a Supporter
from your opponent's hand. This disruption is crucial against decks relying on
specific Supporters. Its 170 HP makes it difficult to OHKO, and attaching
Rocky Helmet punishes attackers with 20 damage in return.
Basic Absol is a safe opening play with Unseen Claw dealing 20 damage normally, or 80 if the opponent's Active Pokémon is affected by a Special Condition. Since nothing in this deck inflicts Special Conditions, the bonus only matters when opponents inflict one on themselves, so Absol usually hits for 20. Its 80 HP and a retreat cost of 1 make it an ideal sacrificial lead that doesn't disrupt your energy attachments.
Matchups
| Matchup | Favorability | How to play it |
|---|---|---|
| Mega Blaziken ex | Favored | Target Blaziken early with Hydreigon's 130 damage Hyper Ray to put it in KO range. Use Mega Absol ex to discard key Supporters. Rocky Helmet helps reach damage thresholds. |
| Darkrai and Mega Altaria ex | Even | Disrupt their strategy by discarding Supporters with Mega Absol ex. Keep Hydreigon active to pressure Darkrai before multiple Energy attachments. |
| Suicune ex and Greninja | Unfavored | Bench sniping threatens your Evolution line. Prioritize Rare Candy to skip vulnerable Zweilous. Hyper Ray's 130 damage knocks out Greninja in one hit, so target it whenever it comes active. |
Tech options and swaps
The single Red Card can be cut for a second Sabrina against non-combo decks. Sabrina can be replaced with additional copies of key cards depending on matchup needs. The Absol tech can be removed for an additional Deino if needing more evolution consistency.
How to pilot it
Dig hard with your draw cards for Deino or Absol plus Rare Candy or Evolution cards. Turn 1: bench a second attacker, and attach Energy to your active if you went second. Turn 2: evolve to Hydreigon using Rare Candy if possible. Use Roar in Unison every turn to accelerate Energy. Turn 3: attack with Hydreigon's Hyper Ray. Since Hyper Ray discards all of Hydreigon's Energy, use Roar in Unison the next turn to re-charge before attacking or retreating to Absol or Mega Absol ex. Avoid overextending Hydreigon and playing Mega Absol ex too early.
Deck strengths
- Strong point trade math against ex-heavy decks
- Hand disruption via Mega Absol ex's Supporter discard
- Flexible early game with multiple starting options
- Energy acceleration through Hydreigon's ability
Deck weaknesses
- Vulnerable to bench snipe attacks
- Struggles against high-HP non ex Pokémon
- Reliant on Hydreigon for energy acceleration
Is it worth building
This deck requires only one ex and two Stage 2 Pokémon, making it relatively affordable. It's ideal for players who enjoy disruptive strategies and precise point trade calculations. The deck rewards skillful sequencing and matchup knowledge.
