Mega Sceptile ex and Greninja Deck Guide in Pokémon TCG Pocket

Chip with Water Shuriken and poison while Terminating Tail deletes anything that stands still

Mega Sceptile ex and Greninja is the best Grass deck in the current format and arguably the strongest deck in the game, pairing a 210 HP Stage 2 finisher with a constant stream of free chip damage. Cheap attackers poke early while two Rare Candy lines assemble, then 130 damage plus Poison plus Water Shuriken snipes converts scattered chip into 3 points before the opponent's plan matures.

How it works

Wird geladen...

Mega Sceptile ex is a 210 HP Stage 2 whose Terminating Tail costs GrassGrassPflanze and hits for 130 while Poisoning the opponent's Active Pokémon, so the target has absorbed 140 before your next turn begins. The attack discards a GrassPflanze Energy after each use, so your Energy Zone attachment goes right back onto it every turn. With Leaf Cape attached it sits at 240 HP, a wall very few decks remove in two hits. Protect it obsessively: as a Mega ex it hands your opponent 3 points when it falls, which usually means the game.

Greninja earns its slot without ever attacking. Its Water Shuriken ability throws 20 damage at any of your opponent's Pokémon once during your turn, every single turn, for free. It finishes the math after Terminating Tail: 130 plus 10 Poison plus a 20 shuriken removes anything with 160 HP or less across one cycle. Mist Slash for WaterColorlessWasser, Farblos and 60 damage exists as a backup, but treat the frog as a turret and keep its 120 HP body parked on the Bench.

Pheromosa is the ideal opener while the Stage 2 lines assemble. Jump Blues costs a single GrassPflanze and does 20 to the Active plus 20 to one of your opponent's Benched Pokémon, so by the time Sceptile is ready the whole enemy board carries damage for Cyrus to drag forward. Its 70 HP usually survives an early hit and trades only 1 point when it falls. Small Balloon drops its Retreat Cost from 1 to 0, letting it slide out the moment your real attacker is charged.

Rare Candy is the deck's skeleton key, jumping a Basic straight to its Stage 2. There is no Stage 1 for the Greninja line in the list at all, so Froakie into Greninja only happens through Rare Candy, while Treecko into Mega Sceptile ex skips Grovyle entirely. It cannot be used on your first turn or on a Basic that entered play this turn, so bench your Basics early to start the clock. Juliana pulls a random Stage 2 from the deck, and with only two in the list she always hands you Mega Sceptile ex or Greninja, while Fragrant Forest fetches the Basic GrassPflanze Pokémon to put underneath.

Matchups

MatchupFavorabilityHow to play it
Mega Sableye ex and GreninjaHeavily favoredTheir darkness attackers are weak to GrassPflanze, so Terminating Tail hits Mega Sableye ex for 150 and one Water Shuriken completes an exact 170 knockout worth 3 points. Set up behind Pheromosa, then take the game in a single turn rather than trading into Cursed Jewel's 40 damage return twice.
Darkrai and Mega Altaria exFavoredDarkrai is also weak to GrassPflanze, so Jump Blues hits it for 40 and Terminating Tail massively overkills its 100 HP. Their chip plan is slower than yours, so keep Sceptile fueled and never leave it in range of a return knockout, since conceding it ends your game too.
Suicune ex and BaxcaliburEvenNo weakness runs in either direction, so this is a race between your Rare Candy turns and their Energy ramp. Aim Water Shuriken and Grovyle's 50 damage Slicing Snipe at their benched setup pieces, and remember every Suicune ex you knock out is worth 2 points, so two knockouts there wins.
Miraidon ex and MagnezoneUnfavoredThey are faster than you and their LightningElektro attacks hit Greninja for 20 extra, deleting its 120 HP if it ever sits in the Active Spot. Make the 240 HP Leaf Cape Sceptile the only target they can touch, and let Poison plus shurikens win the long game their aggression cannot sustain.
Mega Blaziken ex and GreninjaHeavily unfavoredEvery FireFeuer attack lands 20 extra damage on your entire Grass line, and their own Greninja snipes your 60 HP Treecko before it evolves. Lead Froakie, which takes no bonus damage from Fire, rush your own Greninja with Rare Candy, and accept that even a caped Sceptile gets removed in two hits.

Cyrus drags a damaged Benched Pokémon into the Active Spot so Poison, Water Shuriken, and Terminating Tail can finish what Jump Blues started; a second copy is the first upgrade if you free a slot. Small Balloon and Fragrant Forest are the true flex slots, and either can become a Tool-removal Item, a healing card, or a switching effect. Leaf Cape should never leave the list, because a 240 HP Mega Sceptile ex is the difference between giving up 3 points and never giving them up at all. Grovyle is the most cuttable Pokémon since Rare Candy skips it, but the natural line saves you when both candies sit at the bottom of the deck.

How to pilot it

  1. Register GrassPflanze and WaterWasser in your Energy Zone. Grass pays for every attack that matters and Water only exists for Mist Slash, so plan your Terminating Tail fuel around off-type turns.
  2. Turn one, bench aggressively. Going first you get no Energy from the Energy Zone, so spend the turn placing Treecko and Froakie, playing Poké Ball, and dropping Fragrant Forest to dig out a Basic GrassPflanze Pokémon each turn.
  3. Early turns, chip with Pheromosa. One GrassPflanze powers Jump Blues for 20 to the Active and 20 to the Bench, and every dent becomes a Cyrus target later. Dig with Professor's Research and Copycat for Rare Candy and Juliana.
  4. Midgame, deploy the Stage 2 pair. Rare Candy works from your second turn onward on Basics that did not just enter play; evolve Froakie into Greninja first if their deck snipes, or Treecko into Mega Sceptile ex first if their Active is big. From then on, throw Water Shuriken every turn and reattach GrassPflanze to replace what Terminating Tail discards.
  5. Closing, count to 3 points exactly. Regular Pokémon score 1, ex Pokémon score 2, and a Mega ex scores 3, so Terminating Tail into a wounded ex plus a shuriken on a chipped Basic can jump you from 0 to 3. Cyrus turns leftover Bench damage into the final point.
  6. Misplays to avoid: attacking with Terminating Tail when you cannot refuel it next turn, spending Leaf Cape on a chip attacker instead of Sceptile, forgetting the free shuriken, and playing Copycat while your opponent holds a tiny hand.

Deck strengths

  • Terminating Tail plus Poison deals 140 across one turn cycle, and Water Shuriken stretches that to 160 without a second attack
  • Poison, Water Shuriken, and Jump Blues bench hits score knockouts on turns you never attack
  • Leaf Cape pushes Mega Sceptile ex to 240 HP, out of two-hit range for most of the format
  • Poké Ball, Fragrant Forest, and Juliana reliably assemble two Stage 2 lines from single copies
  • Cyrus converts scattered chip damage into on-demand points exactly when you need them

Deck weaknesses

  • The entire Grass line shares a FireFeuer weakness, so fast Fire decks get 20 bonus damage on every attack
  • Losing the single Mega Sceptile ex concedes 3 points and the game outright
  • The dual Energy Zone is random, and a WaterWasser roll on the wrong turn leaves Terminating Tail unpaid
  • Greninja and Froakie are weak to LightningElektro, handing aggressive Lightning decks cheap points

Is it worth building?

Absolutely, if you can afford it. This is the deck to beat right now, but it demands two rare Stage 2 lines headlined by a Mega ex, making it one of the most expensive builds in the game and a poor first project for a new collection. It suits players who enjoy damage bookkeeping, since tracking Poison ticks, shuriken targets, and Cyrus math is where its edge lives. If Fire decks flood your ladder, shelve it for a while; against everything else, it is the strongest thing you can be doing with 20 cards.
